It’s an excellent start. You will make 13-14 in hospitals, but you will always make more in privately own physician offices, billing companies, etc. You can become a RHIT (2yrs) then RHIA (4yrs) and go into management. – $70,000.
I live in NC and at the hospital I work at the coders make around $20 an hour. They got a nice sign on bonus too. Coders are also in high demand too. Way more than I make as a medical records clerk!
Unfortunately, there aren’t supposed to be too many jobs for the medical biller or coder (or medical assistant) despite what those private schools say. The medical coder typically needs a few years experience doing coding tasks and certification(s) and training from an accredited program before possibly obtaining a position.
If still wanting to get training, please look at the more affordable county vo-tech school or community college (perhaps non-credit course) as long as it’s accredited within the industry.

You are not going to make a great salary until you get experience. Every one of the ads I see for these jobs requires experience. You will have to start out entry-level and work your way up. Depending on where you live, you will probably start out at $9-10 an hour. I have a bunch of hospitals near me and every one of them requires at least three years of experience. My mom works for a medical billing company and makes about 18 an hour and that is after several years of doing the job and she has other duties as well. If you are willing to earn your way by getting experience, you can make a decent salary. BUT, make sure there are jobs in your area.
If you decide to go to school, avoid the tech schools/career schools. Try for a community college, which is much less expensive and will probably give you an internship, which is great experience.
