They prepare the billing and insurance forms for hospitals and doctors using the ICD codes, which are standardized codes used throughout the industry for the medical treatment received or the diagnosis. So instead of billing for “flu shot” they have an ICD Code to put down that means ‘flu shot.’ Coders are very much in demand. It’s a solid, secure job field, and well paid.
The opportunities are great if you have experience.

In the medical field everything has a code so as when submitted to the insurance companies for payment it will match the amount they will pay for the specific treatment.. Believe me from years of experience with my son’s accident and approx. $580,000 in medical bills I have learned about codes. If the treatment is not submitted with the proper code the payment will be rejected.
The difficult part I’m told is that there really is’nt one universal system of codes. Many insurance companies have developed their own system. What a suprise!
