I am wondering about medical coding. I know you have to have certifications to become a medical coder?

But what kind is best. What do employers look at when deciding who to employ?

The medical world holds a wealth of different careers from the obvious nurse and doctor careers to adminstrative careers. My sister wanted to work in this field, but she wasn’t certain perfectly what she wanted to do. She found the resource in the resource box below, it has lots of guidance, and it aided her to decide what she wanted to do. They have guidance with other jobs too.
AHIMA has certifications for coding. It depends if you want to do physician office or hospital coding as the credentials are different. You can start w/ your CCA credential. Also, for info on certification check out http://www.med-certification.com
Depending on your location. I’m on the eastern side of the US and the AHIMA certification holds more weight (www.ahima.org). I went to school for Medical Coding and Billing. I received my CCA cert. and started in a small clinic. I then went on the receive my Health Information Tech, and I have my RHIT through AHIMA, After completion of both of these I had taken my CCS, which only has a 44 percent pass rate. I am now a supervisor of Coders and Assistant Director of Medical Records for a large hospital.
I would look into a school with accreditation or you will never pass the coding certification. Doctors are realizing you need to have certified coders to understand what to do in order to receive the highest possible payout.
Now, like I said I would start and take the CCA, (Certifited coding Associate) you need 300 out of 400 minimum to pass, but a small percentage is coding and a larger portion is insurance. So make sure you know about compliance and insurance billing procedures.
