Medical billing and medical coding are two different things. Neither require a certification but for coding it is best to obtain one through AHIMA. Without certification in a doctors off, about $12 an hour to start. With certification a little more. Hospital coders make about $20 an hour but they have a higher level training and credentialing.

If you need a job to support 3 kids and need to train fast and affordably, I suggest looking into Medical Transcription. There are many jobs available. The pay starts out low .. $8 to $10 an hour, but by the end of the first year most MTs earn $18 to $20 an hour AND they work at home, which saves a TON on daycare, commuting, etc.

Training w/ a good school takes about 4 months to a year. You want to choose a school that offers an internship program to help you get working right away.
