HELP! University of Phoenix–does it actually get people good jobs like a regular college? In medical billing?

*PLEASE READ* Ok please only rspond if YOU earned a degree from there or actually KNOW someone personally who has. What was your job search experience like after graduating? Did u get turned down a lot for not having a degree from a traditional college? What did u earn ur degree in and what are you doing now?

Ok, the resaon i ask is because my mother just started taking classes (actual classes in a building) through the University of Phoenix recently at one of their campuses near our home. She is persuing a degree in medical records/ medical billing. Now, after reading different forums on people criticizing the school and talking about how bad it is, I am a bit concerned that my mother may be making a bad choice by going to the University of Phoenix. She got laid off from an office job that she was at for 12 years just a few months ago, and in looking for a new job she realized that she needed a degree to work anywhere, so that prompted her to start taking classes thru UoP. She is a grown woman about 50.

Is she making a mistake? I am just woried because shes excited about taking classes there and I really dont want her to be dissapointed if she cant get a job after she graduates from there. Please Tell me your experiences! Thanks in advance

I learned in a Sociology class( at a university) that colleges such as those teach only the minimum skills needed while charging a high price tag. It is the method they use by looking highly specialized because they tend to be small. Only avoid the ones that tend to multiply in different states and that recruit with television commercials and whatnot. If a college was actually good and credible then they would not need to recruit on open television. Otherwise I think she will be fine. My sister became a medical assistant from one of these colleges and she makes decent money, but not as much as she could be making.

Sorry I know this is minimal personal experience, but the knowledge you learn in college is useful too!

Ok, I have never taken classes from there or know of anyone who has, but I have some input about colleges that are frequently advertised on television, such as ITT, Everest Institute (formerly NIT), University of Phoenix etc.

I went to NIT, as well as many people I know. I graduated from the Medical Assistant program.. This school preys on the ignorant. People who are looking for a quick fix, an easy degree…they sucker you in, and make their “degrees” out to be wonderful, when you aren’t even getting an actual degree from an accreditited university, the type of work you can get with your certificate may only pay slightly above minimum wage, and you are paying rediculously expensive tuition for what you will be left with after completing the program. Most of the programs offered at these types of “schools” can be found at actual colleges and universities, where you can earn transferrable credits, and maybe even earn a REAL degree. Tell your mother to check into a local community college. Many community colleges offer evening and night classes for non-traditional students.

I have since received an associates degree in nursing from a community branch of WVU, I am a Registered Nurse…I paid much less to achieve this goal, of an actual career making excellent pay, than what I did for the medical assistant certificate where I made 8 bucks an hour, and was $12,000 in debt afterwards.
