Do you have to take the course to become a medical billing and coding specialist?

Can you just study on your own and then take the exam?

There are, unfortunately, not too many jobs for the medical biller or coder (or medical assistant) despite what those private $$ tech schools say. With medical billing, a lot of companies are outsourcing to Asia/India so that the jobs are more scarce. Regarding medical coding, most people need a couple of years experience doing coding tasks, certification(s) in the field and preferably completion of an accredited program to possibly find a job. The health care facility could get a pretty hefty fine if the documentation is coded incorrectly and a lot of codes seem very similar.

Whichever field that you pursue, please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools such as penn foster, US career, everest, ITT tech, sanford brown, devry, university of phoenix, strayer, kaplan, walden, capella and others as they are merely out to ‘make a profit’ (and course credits may not transfer): http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search.
