Are there jobs for Certified Medical Coders?

I live in California, in the north bay. I am considering an online certificate program for medical coding, and then taking the tests to become certified. In my research I have come across a lot of blogs where everyone says they have a hard time finding coding work. Also, any suggestions as far as which school is the best? Thanks!

It is very difficult to get a job in Medical coding. I went to a community college for this field back in 2005 and i could not find employment anywhere once i was done with the program. Every hospital, doctor’s office, or coding facility where i applied for a job at did not want to hire me because i was just coming out of school with no experience.

A friend of mine went to school for Medical Coding as well. She went to one of those expensive private schools and she did very well in the program and finished and could not get hired anywhere either.

I don’t think that Medical Coding is even worth the time going to school for. If i were you i would consider doing something else.

You might want to catch CNBC. They have an article on Obama proposing to save money on healthcare by streamlining the paperwork. He’s looking to go digital on the process. Hence, there will be a need for medical coders and health care IT folks.

There are a lot of good schools out there and a lot of bad ones. I’m going through Meditec.com. I’m also a medical transcriptionist.

To answer your question about jobs- I’ve had several friends go through career training for this and land jobs right away in doctors offices. They were not high paying jobs- around $12 an hour. However, they were NOT certified yet. With certification, starting w/ the CCA and then moving on to the CCS, the money is good. As far as the jobs being there, it depends on your area. In my small town of 6,000 people, every few weeks, I see “a” job offer for a medical coder. If I were to go to the next largest town, there are tons of jobs for coders and billers.

Look in your local newspaper for a full week and see how many coding/billing jobs you see. Call them and ask if they would consider a person just out of school.
